Whether in a personal session, a workshop or through her writing, Fernanda Rossi supports and guides filmmakers with proven methodologies in the creation and improvement of rough cuts, fundraising trailers, synopses, treatments, scripts and pitches. She has doctored over 300 documentaries, fiction scripts and work samples, including two Academy Award® nominees.

 

Fernanda has been invited to give presentations and seminars for major world conferences and organizations such as HotDocs, Sheffield Doc/Fest, and SilverDOCS. Her columns and articles have been published in trade publications like The Independent, Documentary Magazine, and many others. She is also the author of the book that, according to industry professionals is the bible on demo production: Trailer Mechanics: A Guide to Making your Documentary Fundraising Demo.

Fernanda Rossi has doctored over 300 documentaries, fiction scripts and fundraising trailers including the 2009 Fernanda Rossi has doctored over 300 documentaries, fiction scripts and fundraising trailers including the 2009 Academy Award® nominated The Garden by Scott Hamilton Kennedy and the 2007 Academy Award® nominated Recycled Life by Leslie Iwerks. She also collaborated on the theatrically-released Billy the Kid by Jennifer Venditti, and numerous festival-awarded films and projects that have been broadcast on HBO, POV and Independent Lens. The synopses, treatments and fundraising trailers she consulted on won grants from NYSCA, New York State Council for the Arts; ITVS, International Television Service and NEH, National Endowment for the Humanities.

Ms. Rossi is regularly invited to give lectures and seminars on story structure and fundraising trailers by major world conferences, markets and film organizations. She has lectured at HotDocs, Sheffielf Doc/Fest, WestDocs, SilverDOCS, and SunnySide of the Doc. Fernanda is also the presenter and trainer of choice for organizations like IDA and NALIP in the United States, DOC in Canada and Doc Campus in Europe (see comprehensive list here.). Ms. Rossi has read, viewed and evaluated over 500 proposals and works-in-progress as a grant panelist for New York State Council for the Arts, the Latino Public Broadcast and ITVS Open Call and International Call. Fernanda’s projects as a writer, producer and director include numerous fiction shorts, and over seven feature length scripts and documentaries. Her short Clara como el Agua (Clara like Water) was the recipient of the LPB Media Fund for 2010 while her feature-length script Picture Me! was invited to the 2005 Latin American Sundance Screenwriters Laboratory. Her documentary Inventing a Girl: An Experience in Homeschooling, premiered at the Contemporary Issues Film Festival and was the winner of the Women’s Vision Award.

Rossi’s Film Degree included several courses on semiotics, giving her a strong theoretical foundation in story structure; theory she put into practice with eight years of film editing followed by ten years of exclusive and full time consulting on rough cuts and trailers. Her writing, producing and directing over the past twenty years has provided her with invaluable insight into the creative and production process, making her more aware of the specific challenges filmmakers’ face.
